From: Peter Game <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi all, It seems to be a pet desire of the HIC to have ultrasound examinations performed only where there is a radiologist on site, to provide 'personal supervision' of the sonographer. The Federal Health Dept doesn't agree (I thought they were on the same team!). I have heard arguments from prominent radiologists from the RACR in support of this proposition, but with most radiologists being now employed by large corporations there is the possibility that the opinions of the 'college' are being somewhat coloured. Also it has been my experience that a radiologist personally examining an ultrasound patient is the exception rather than the rule. Given that background, I am keen to gather any anecdotal evidence from sonographers relating to current practices in radiology centres where there are fulltime radiologists. The sort of information I would like is: 1. Where there is a sonographer performing the exam, what percentage of patients are personally examined by a radiologist? 2. Of those patients personally examined, what percentage are examined because the radiologist feels they need to for diagnosis, as opposed to wanting to because they have a particular interest in ultrasound? 3. In those cases where the radiologist personally examined a patient, in what percentage were the sonographer's findings changed? 4. Since personal attendance for musculoskeletal ultrasound was introduced, what percentage of radiologists personally examine the patient themselves?
I'm certainly not interested in naming names or getting specific information about specific groups or radiologists, just a general overview. If the results are as interesting as I suspect they might be, I will then try to organise a formal survey to be undertaken for the information of the HIC and Health Dept.
