Correct, "the new read side" is step 2, now we're doing step 1 which will make the "write side" stable and a fully supported module. We have identified a number of important changes that need to be made to the write side and plugin API before we can call it stable - this is the current step we're making. One of the addressed questions is schema evolution, tools and docs about it.
