There has been a variety of solutions given and the choice of method depends
on how much mismatch there is. I once had to work with a head where the cams
were really tight and just would not rotate freely. Luckily it was at the
stage when I was checking how well the cams rotated. My solution was to use
some CRC as lube and just keep rotating the cams with vise grips until they
freed up. Don't forget that both the caps and head are aluminium, aluminum
to Murricans :-) and soft compared with the steel of the camshafts.

You can be really brutal and speed up the process using fine grinding paste
but be careful and remember to thoroughly clean afterwards. If you're doing
this it would be wise to not torque down the cams fully but carry out this
"Honing" in stages.

Subject: [alfa] Cam bearing caps

I've heard, from multiple sources, that cam bearing caps cannot be
swapped or replaced, but I've never heard the explanation why this is
the case.
     I purchased a clean used 2L head from a (non-local) Alfa dealer a
number of years ago. The head was already stripped down and did not
come with the cam bearing caps. I've already done some porting on the
new head so I am reluctant to scrap it and start over, but the
missing cam bearing caps makes me worry. Can I use this head or have
the missing caps transmographied it into an expensive workbench
decoration?
