With the top up and a window cracked, a slight vacuum is produced inside the
cabin and this tends to suck air from the trunk area.  If you open both
windows wide open, or have them both shut, you shouldn't smell any fumes.
One 'cure' is to get the down-curved exhaust tip which sent the exhaust
toward the ground - which I never implemented on my '86 Spider.

Do you think that the smell is more akin to gasoline rather than exhaust?
If so, then check all your fuel hoses (in fact just replace them all since
they are quite old by now), the vapor recovery system, and the fuel gauge
sender gasket (located on top of the tank).
