Hi all, long time no talk to...
Thought I'd share what I did, for the cheapskates out there... Would
there be any cheapskates in the Alfa Fraternity? ;-)
Just last week, was going thru stuff and turned up my old, removed
Pilot Bushing, and the rod I
used to get it out with.
The calipers say the bushing ID is .634", or about 16.1 mm. (your wear
may vary, mine looked pretty worn.)
I went to a local "industrial" tool/hardware store, they had loads of
polished steel rod stock, in convenient 4" long and other lengths.
Think they were "drill blanks" or some such. Well, a 5/8" piece is
.625", a pretty close fit. I think it was $4.00 or something like that...
So, some nice thick wheel bearing grease, packed up the bearing hole,
put the rod in there, and with my 4lb Harbor Freight sledge (which might
have been also $4.00 on sale) banged away. Once the remaining air got
out... only a couple of good whacks... out it came. Isn't Hydraulics
wonderful?

There is a good description of how to remove a pilot bushing here
http://www.custompistols.com/cars/articles/pilot_bushing.htm
This method fills the cavity with grease and then uses a close fitting
rod inserted into the pilot bushing. Hit the rod with a hammer and the
compressed grease will push out the pilot bushing. I have used this
method successfully many times and it works best if the rod fits snugly
in the pilot bushing so that the grease does not escape between the rod
and the pilot bushing.
