Skip, Now that you have the head separated from the block a bit, check to see if the head gasket is sticking to the block in one place and to the head in another. If that situation occurs the head will tip a bit causing it to bind on the studs, and to resist any further movement. The cure for that is to cut the head gasket where it is holding these two big pieces together.
