To replace the heater core the unit will need to be removed. The dash does indeed need to be removed in order to do that.

It is not as daunting a job as it may sound. In our '84 Spider it takes as long to remove the center console (which has to come out first) as to remove the dash.

Speaking of heater cores...The one thing fairly major left to do on my 1978 Spider is to install a new heater core. The old one failed about three years ago and my mechanic just disconnected everything. It's been in that state since. I'm not much of a do-it-yourselfer, but I have handy friends. The thing is, now that the interior has been redone, I'm reluctant to start anything that might ruin things--I've heard that removing the old core can involve liquids leaking, etc. I'd hate to ruin the pristine carpet. I'm wondering, though: Now that three years have passed, is there likely to be any liquid left in the system to worry about? Also, is this a big job? Can anyone give me an estimate of how long it might take amateurs to do it? Is it something best left to a pro? Does it involve anything nasty like removing the dashboard (probably not, but you never know)?. Anything else that would be sensible to replace at the same time?

Thanks!
