Sorry, I sit corrected. I don't think one can remove the heater unit from an
S3 Spider without removing the dash. But I could be wrong about that, too.

One point I do want to make is that removing the Spider dash is NOT such a
daunting task. Remove the instrument's connections (wires &/or cables), the
defroster hoses & a few screws (a couple of them in our S3 Spider are wing
nuts so Alfa must have assumed the dash would be coming out occasionally) then
dash comes out.

I did once remove the lower half of the heater unit to access the blower
motor. Do-able but not an easy job. I am not sure if it was easier than
removing the dash or not - probably an equal on the 'difficulty/length of
time' scale.

  You don't need to remove the dash to remove the heater box on a '78 Spider.
I've done the job more than once.  If you're looking for an excuse to yank the
dash, then it will make access easier, but it's not terribly difficult to pull
the heater box with the dash in place.
