Ed,

I was going to correct your post, but you did it your self. Are you
sure the 86 spider had the small starter? I have never owned an 86, but I
have owned at least 3 87 spiders. I did cut up an 86 Quad, but it came to me
missing a lot of parts including the starter.
   The 131 tooth flywheel came
on all Alfas from 1975 thru 1989, including the Alfetta. Therefore, the gear
reduction starter will fit the Alfetta.

    I also have 3 91 spiders. I am
thinking of seeing if the 91 starter will work on my 74 GTV. Both have a 130
tooth flywheel.

Ciao,
Russ Neely

Re: Starter oddity follow up

Correction: The 86-89 reduction gear starter
will work on 2L motors from 75 - 85 with a 131 tooth ring gear. The 73/74 2L
had a 130 ring gear.

gear reduction starter on my 79 Spider for many years. It came off an 86. I am
pretty sure that the Motronic starters are different from the late Jetronics
and that you can use a gear reduction starter from an 86-89 spider on any
earlier 2L spider.
