A transaxle or even a differential (ala XKE) in any car with IRS or De Dion, or even swing-axels, would have to have it affixed rigidly either to the frame or the body. Otherwise there would be nothing to support it relative to the suspension and half-shafts. On a solid axle car, a transmission/differential COULD, conceivably, be mounted in unit with the solid half-shafts, but imagine the engineering problems of coupling the shift mechanism to a transmission moving with the suspension, not to mention the unsprung weight.

It's not the DeDion. That's merely the suspension.

The problem is with the relative location of the transaxle. Remember that the transaxle is floor mounted and does not move with the suspension. The 4 and 6cyl Alfettas all have almost identical componentry, and almost identical problems.

i must get that book but off hand i would say the didion setup as is causes the trouble.as we see it is the same problem with the four or six.i suppose a
diffrent rear setup instead of that triangle may be the answer.
