You cannot remove the rocker arm shaft with the cylinder head still on the
engine block.

The reason is that the rocker arm shaft has notches(reliefs) in it. Through
these reliefs pass the cylinder heads studs.

In fact, if after reassembling a head you don't properly align the rocker
arm shaft (notches facing the studs) you can't even get the head to go back
on the block.

Removing the rocker arm shaft itself can be a real chore. Sometimes it comes
out easy, other times you have to clamp the head to the bench and use a
slide hammer to get the shaft out. The shaft is threaded internally at the
front,  it takes a 10mm bolt, I forget the pitch.
