Alan:
2) Although I've replaced the thermostat, and the temperature
gauge sender, nothing helps--- Although the engine will heat
to 185 if I idle it long enough, once I drive and air goes
through the radiator, the temperature drops to just below 140.
Any idea what's going on?
I suspect you have a sticking thermostat. It's not closing all the way.
Next time you drive the car, wait for it to come up to temp, then using a
very light hammer or the handle of a screwdriver, give the thermostat
housing a solid tap or two. Get back in and drive, and I bet you'll see the
temp come up to normal. Some time back, I bought a thermostat that stuck
from brand new. I ended up re-installing the old one.
