Biba,

NEVER reuse a headgasket....unless there is no other option.

How much is a headgasket? How much will it cost to replace it if it fails?

NEVER reuse a headgasket....unless there is no other option.

You say the gasket is being refitted in EXACTLY the same position, but this isn't true. If components can be made to mate perfectly, then gaskets are not required. Gaskets by definition are there to account for imperfections. The head and block will never mate back exactly the same, and moreso on the Alfa twin cam as the sleeves and block are separate entities.

NEVER reuse a headgasket....unless there is no other option, or you wish to experiment.

If the experiment goes ahead, and it works, go ahead and gloat. However I'd then stop buying lottery tickets and skydiving because your luck is all used up. Consider that in aviation, if someone reused a gasket and the gasket failed, they could end up in prison.

NEVER reuse a headgasket....unless there is no other option.

Subject: [alfa] Reusing head gaskets

Umm, guys, to quote myself, "...that has been removed from an engine that hasn't been run." The 750 engine with a 101 head has not been installed. After hearing more and more comments regarding rods breaking and considering this engine has 1500 cc's, I talked my client into the need for Carrello rods. They're now installed and it seems silly to me not to reuse the (virtually) brand new 1600 head (I believe) Reinz head gasket.

But I've been told not to.

Why?
