Try this site:

and scroll down to parts #11 and on. Maybe something there or at the
Seals
section.

They came with a minimum at 1.500mm from factory. You may regrind them
using a
fine sand paper but it's not the best way. If you try cut the top of the
valve,
don't do it. there is sodium inside.

I did this a few years ago, I think as a result of one of my wires
shorting out or something. I believe that I replaced the grommet with a
somewhat common sealed electrical box connector from McMaster-Carr:
http://www.mcmaster.com/#cord-grips/=67a93o (go to this page, then click
on "cord grips", and then on "multicord"). There are a couple of
varieties: ones with a rubber insert having multiple holes through which
you pass the various wires and the nut compresses the insert to seal
around the wires, and then a similar sort with heat shrink extensions
that might be even better. I think I used the former type, but I don't
drive my GTV in foul weather so sealing isn't critical. Neither looks
particularly original, but they do the job. I think I used ones to fit
standard 1/2" electrical conduit knockouts, but it has been a while so
you ought to measure the holes to check before buying. I may have gotten
a small rubber washer to put around the connection to the bucket to help
seal that interface, too.

1. Only the exhaust valve stems are hollow and contain metallic sodium.

2. If you had ever seen a drawing of a sodium filled valve, you would
know that the hollow part of the stem (and the sodium) does not extend
into the top third of the length of the valve stem--so this is a
non-issue for this operation.

There ARE two problems with 'tipping' the upper end of the valve stems:

First--the case is much harder than the interior of the stem--if you
remove too much material, and go through the case hardness, the tip of
the stem may tend to 'mushroom', and create a LOT of pretty obvious
problems.

Second--the surface of the end of the valve stem must be absolutely
SQUARE to the length of the stem when the job is complete. So--this
operation is NOT something which ought to be attempted with any sort of
hand tool !!

Being the contrary sort--I once took a sodium filled exhaust valve
(taken from a Chrysler 413 truck engine), put it in a vise, and cut the
stem in two using a 9" angle grinder. Wore a leather welding jacket and
gloves, and a face shield, 'just in case'. "pfffftt" (lower case
intended) was all that happened, as the sodium inside the valve turned
into sort of a yellowish colored lump. I'm still here more than a couple

of decades later.

Subject: [alfa] Styrofoam in the foot wells GTV 2000

Greetings,

My '72 GTV appears to have factory equipped wedges of molded styrofoam
in
the passenger side foot well. I state this because the wedge perfectly
fills
an indentation in the foot well and that I don't believe the car has
been
every restored. Do others have a wedge of foam in their car's foot
wells?
What does one do when a replacement wedge is needed?

Thanks,

Robert

It sounds like you've checked the valve lashes with the head on the
bench,
or at least without the normal loads on it. Torque it down and check
the
lashes again. I'll guarantee you they'll be different, and with some
luck,
this may no longer be an issue for you.
