Sonny -
If the title is not branded, then this is not a problem. However, I have
seen salvage titles from California on cars that were theft recoveries. Just
thought you should be aware of the possibility. Once branded, it will not
ever have a completely clean title. I guess that I'd do a CarFax check, just
to be safe.

As to the crux of your problem, actually bidding and buying. Obviously, I
can't help you there. I am in Minnesota.

Peace,
Ben

Ben,
Your reply doesn't really address the crux of my argument. If theft recovery
is not cause for a salvage title in California (as per the DMV Web page I
referred to a few Digests ago), then your experience is irrelevant for the
matter at hand.

Unless the insurance company for some reason sees it in its interest to get
the recovered car on a salvage title (but why?) or mistakenly thinks it needs
one, and the DMV does not turn down the request.

Things have gotten considerably tighter in the last 10 years. It is rare
that a title escapes being branded today. Oh, and I had one that the state
neglected to label as salvage, but it was still considered salvage on state
records and on CarFax. Tough to escape it.

Peace,
Ben
