As Ira said, put a jack under the front of the bat wing oil pan and rotate
the engine down in the rear. Remove the front headpipe of the exhaust so the
engine will tilt better and to give move working room.
    The long studs can
be removed by double nutting them, but I like the studs becuase they help
align the transmission going back in.
While it is out, check the clutch
disk. Inspect the flywheel and pressure place mating surfaces for glazing
and hair line cracks. A blue color would indicate that the clutch got too
hot at some time. A good clutch shop can resurface the flywheel and cut the
mounting rim a like amount to maintain pressure from the pressure place.
    I
normally replace the pilot bushing in the rear of the cranshaft and the throw
out bearing. I almost never replace the pressure plate.

    Plus I normally
move fifth gear synchronizer and engagement slider from fifth gear to second
and vice versa. The reverse side of fifth gear synco gets no wear and the
syncho never works on low gear anyway. That is a really cheap transmission
rebuild. It works fine the first time. But third gear can also be starting
to wear.
If you are paying someone to crack the transmission, they are
probably going to insist on using new parts as they are going to guarentee
their work.

Ciao,
Russ Neely

Subject: [alfa] Tranny Install

Dear Alfistas
I lost second
gear in a '86 spider. Found a used tranny. Had a real hard time getting the
old one over the stationary bolts. Has anyone got any tips or tricks to
re-install? Thanx!
