As others said, disconnect the down- pipe from the header, disconnect the drag link at one end, and put a jack under the front of the engine.

Sometimes, even this is not enough to allow the transmission to go back on the studs. (seems worse on late(r) Spiders).

When this occurs, I find it easier to remove the studs, slide the transmission into place, then put the studs back in.

Years ago, on our race car, I went so far as to replace the studs with bolts to make removal and installation easier. Never had any problems from doing this, but it is not reccomened.

It also helps if you use the input shaft from the transmission to align the clutch. (this only works if you either have the transmission apart, or have scavenged a junk transmission for parts)

Dear Alfistas
I lost second gear in a '86 spider. Found a used tranny. Had a real hard time getting the old one over the stationary bolts. Has anyone got any tips or tricks to re-install? Thanx!
