Which is absolutely a _TERRIFIC_ way to brinnell (aka RUIN) the pinion
bearings and quite possibly some gear teeth !!
Use the proper (or make a suitable) tool to restrain the companion
flange from turning, and use the correct socket on the nut.
My GUESS at adequate torque would be at LEAST 150 ft. lbs., likely more.
