If you get into the habit of pushing the button in, while pulling the handle
up, then releasing the button to lock the handle in place, the mechanism will
never wear out.

The teeth on the ratchet mechanism get worn and cause this problem. The fix is
to either replace the worn parts or file/grind the teeth so that they are
sharp again.
