The hand brakes are fairly flimsy. Two of my best and favorite Alfa mechanics suggest: don't unnecessarily stress them but using them unless they are really needed, such as a hill start or San Francisco/San Marino/Alps-type parking situation. Besides the prawl issues already addressed, the steel cable* broke on two or three of my Alfas over the years and just had to be replaced. I've also heard there can be an issue at the business (brake) end of the line, but I've never experienced it. * when this happened, the brake had been actuated by my beautiful wife, who is know to have a strange. destructive effect on metals. She also snapped a Spider door handle, destroyed several mechanical wristwatches, and has made many other amazing demonstartions of this ability. YMMV. I just reworked one in a '94 Spider and it was identical to my '67 Duetto. Two things usually go wrong with them. The grease used for lubrication gets hard and packed in the mechanism restricting travel. The teeth on the pawl and its adjoining rack become rounded and therefore slip. I used a little cut off grinder to smooth the edges and make them match once more. I guess a file would also work but would take longer ;-) Hope this helps, Skip Patnode '67 Duetto Norfolk, Va Date: Thu, 6 Jan 2011 10:34:45 -0500 From: Bruce Giller < > Subject: [alfa] GTV hand brake The e-hand brake on my '73 GTV no longer holds its position when it is pulled up; not much in the way of clicking from the pawls. I've got a late model (Jetronic FI) Spider IAP repair manual. Are the two e-hand brake assemblies similar enough that I can use the manual's section on the e-hand brake to repair the GTV ? I didn't take apart the headlight section for two reasons 1) it is working fine & B) I'd need to drill out some small rivets. http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/spider-1966-up/146088-combination-switch-cle an-lube.html Don't know if this is the same/similar to the GTV. Lifting up the boot covering revealed that a thin piece of metal that holds it to the body had broken. I had my body shop re-weld it and all was fine. I don't have any pictures of it but it was at the rear of the assembly. The teeth on the ratchet mechanism get worn and cause this problem. The fix is to either replace the worn parts or file/grind the teeth so that they are sharp again.
