Ben,

I have both a 71 GTV and a 71 Spider, both with a 1750. I've never
had starter problems with the original starters. I'm pretty sure that
the ring gear would have to be changed in order to use any of the
newer starters, I don't think you can change the drive gear on a 2
liter starter to mesh with the 1750 flywheel. I installed the Les
Herlock oil filter adapter on both engines and had nothing but leaks.
Les was very good about fixing the problems. it turned out to be my
filter housings were slightly different than the one he based his
design on. I don't know if he is still making them, but if he is,
I'd send your housing to him. I also replaced my rear tail lights. I
ended up getting the Euro amber/red lens as I think they look better
than the all red USA version. I'm on my second 71 GTV. I bought one
new in 1971 and drove it till 1986 when I replaced it with the 71
Spider that I still have today. In 2002 my wife bought me my current
71 GTV for my 50th birthday. A very nice rust free California car
that I fully restored. I live in Syracuse New York and am looking
forward to the end of our long winter so that I can get them back on
the road.

Good luck on your project,

Dick Stachowiak
