Brian:

Thanks for the suggestion. I've been told since I posted my request on the digest that the front and back 'rubber' bumpers are made of steel with a rubber outer covering. Remember they were supposed to be 5 mph impact resistant. If this is correct, then my rear bumper is rotting, really rusting, from the inside out. I could try and pick as much out as possible and bondo it.

Thanks for the front bumper offer, right now my front bumper is in very good condition. It's the rear only that is a problem.

Thanks very much for your reply.

I think the internals are rotting away. I'd chisel out what you can, then fiberglass or bondo the rest and paint it.

I've got a very good condition front bumper for your car, but it's located in the Boston area..

I have a 1982 Spider and it has rubber bumpers front and back.

The car is in good overall condition, including, I though, the bumpers. I
noticed that one end of the rear bumpers seemed to be pulling away and upon a close look the bottom rear of the bumper, that is the side facing the body, is
split and the inside seems coming out. The material seems to be very hard
sheets and it is almost as if the bumper is rotting from the inside out. The
car has not been hit, I should not be as a result of damage.

I know that Bondo has a rubber bumper repair product, which I was going to
use, before I noticed the extent of the splitting. I could probably try and
clamp the bumper back together, it might mean removing some of the hard
'sheets' from inside, but if I am correct that it is rotting, I'm not sure
what what should be done. I don't think you can get a new replacement any
longer.

Does this make sense to any one and has anyone seen this in their car? Does anyone know if there any way of repairing what I have? Does anyone know if
there Is there anything I might do to retard further deterioration?

Thanks very much!
