My understanding, from previous posts on the digest, in California if
you go to the DMV and show them the build date on the ID plate they can
change the model year on the registration to that year. i.e a car built
in 10/75 can be listed as a 1975 model year car on the registration,
even though it was first registered in January of 1976.
The DMV has no way of knowing when the 1975 cars ended and the 1976 cars
began. The model year that the DMV has is usually what the dealer wrote
on the paper work. You can always argue that the original dealer made a
mistake. Given the time that it took in 1975 to ship a car from Italy to
the dealer and then to finally find a buyer for that funny Italian car
quite a few months can go by. It's probably worth a try. Even if you do
get an earlier date ID plate you will still have to convince the DMV
that the paperwork you do have in incorrect.
Id the ID plate has the vehicle serial number on it then it is probably
a violation of several Federal and State laws to change it. Your best
bet is to convince the DMV that the title you have is in error and they
will probably just change it.
