Dan,
I was once in a similar position.B This may vary state to state, but I believe that insurance companies are actually required to pay fair market value for the car if they "total" it.B Now, they often try not to have to do this, and most people don't bother to fight with them much over it, because they figure "something is better than none at all".B However, since Alfas are less common than a Ford Tarus, for example, the replacement cost may not match what "The Book" says.B If you can find comparable cars for sale on various online sites to your year and mileage, use those to argue with the insurance company if they try to low ball you.B It took a few months longer, but it worked well for me.B My '91 B was in a rear end collision, and after it was "totaled" I had the sheet metal fixed, plastic bumper replaced, repainted the car and got it back on the road.B I ended up paying for the paint job, the insurance check covered the rest of it.B Definately well worth the hassle and time that it took me though!!! ~ Johnathan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Jun 2011 09:42:46 -0500 From: "Dan Lewis" <[email protected]> Subject: [alfa] Wrecked Alfa Spider Quad - What would You Do? So my '88 Quad took a 20MPH hit on the left-front corner, which has left me with some banged-up body parts and (sadly) a crumpled frame member ahead (mostly) and behind (less) of the LF wheel. The rest of the vehicle is in pretty decent shape, having less than 90K on it. I'm guessing, due to the frame damage, the insurance company will likely "total" it. My dilemma is this - do I take the $$ and send another of a dwindling number of Spiders off to, probably, the crusher? Or, do I take a lesser percentage and hope to part it out or find a buyer for a rebuild? The former is irrevocable but pays well. The latter keeps one or several more Spiders on the road, but is kind of a pain. Your thoughts or comments?
