I would add - set the distributor so that one of the lobes is pointing
straight at the pickup.

Right ... Set the engine such that #1 is at TDC on the compression stroke,
and
the ignition rotor is pointing at the #1 terminal on the cap. If the engine
doesn't start, diddle the distributor a little one way or the other until it
starts.
Warm it up, and then use your timing light.
Done this 100s (if not 1000s) of times ...
