I think Chris is correct on this one.  As I understand it, the transaxle 
propeller shaft is balanced as an assembly.   I do not think this includes 
hardware or the yokes at either end of the shaft.  Having said that, the shop 
manuals I have mention marking the yokes and the shaft prior to disassembly and 
re-assembling them accordingly.  Of course, doing so could not hurt at all!

I'd never heard of this either... so I didn't do it when I replaced the donuts
4-5 years ago on my stock '79 gt. And so far, 10,000 or so miles later in all
kinds of driving, everything still seems to be working fine (knock on wood).

Maybe this is someone getting confused with "don't cinch down your bushings
before the car's on the ground"?
