Steve -

To some degree (pun intended) the theory you present is a good one. However,
it has little to do with aluminum as an engine material. Internal combustion
that is well controlled simply works better when hotter. The same is true
for cast iron engines. The problem is control. You will find that most newer
engines run well at quite high temps. Some of the V8s are cast iron. You
will also note that they are extremely well controlled by electronics. I
take to heart your other reasons for modifying the thermostat holder.

Ben,

Go with option 3. It means you can get a thermostat anytime, anyplace if
you're out on the road. While you're at it, get the hottest one you can.
Alloy motors run better with a hotter thermostat. I got that from Dennis at
Norman Racing; I was present while he was talking to a guy who had a Pantera
with an alloy Corvette engine in it. I put a 190 or 195 in my Berlina
(whatever the hottest one was) and suddenly it not only ran better, but I
had heat and defrost that actually worked!

This is the first time that I have run into a non-functioning V6 thermostat.
This one does not open properly and needs to be replaced. I need opinions on
using the three types available:

. Replacement insert (as sold by IAP and others)

. Replacement t-stat with housing (as original)

. American style t-stat (machine housing to eliminate tabs)

Number 3 is by far the cheapest. What have you all done? The original with
housing was not available for quite some time, so I know some of you have
experience with the other two options.
