You say you are a belt and suspenders man.... what about using the venerable "rope trick" of stuffing some nice, soft, nylon cord into the cylinder through the plug hole, then pushing the piston back up a bit to make a material barrier to the valve falling out? Seems like a better thing to me than fishing out a valve from the cylinder. Just trying to help.
