IMO you have it wrong. The angle of the steering column is very steep. Who
knows where it will pivot in a big front end collision but there must be a 50
% chance that the steering wheel will move away from the driver. The risk from
being impaled on a steering column is when driving cars with forward mounted
steering boxes. That is why they were moved back to the bulk head. Rack and
pinions are even safer.
