Eric I remember the 164 having a problem with the coolant temperature sensor
harness being too tight I expect that with a history of John's car that it's
probably been corrected but I agree with the other people who say that it's
probably the coolant temp sensor but also check the plug for corrosion that's
usually what causes the problem. It can also cause the car to run very very
rich.  Very often with the position of that sensor and the plug it gets wet
and gets kind of a green corrosion inside the plug area it's a really good
place for a little bit of dielectric silicone grease.
