Jak asks:
- - are any injector cleaners useful ?
- - what solvent are they really ?
- - is anything rebottled & sold by Lucas legitimate or a scam ?
I have used BG Products' 44K many times. My *sense* is that it was
beneficial. But I have no measured data to support that claim. It's
purported to reduce and eliminate deposits that accumulate on the pintle and
seat of the fuel injectors and also to remove carbon buildup on the intake
valves. Does it work? I don't really know. I've never taken an engine
apart before using it, examined the injectors and intake valves, and then
repeated the process again afterward. To be sure, injectors do develop
deposits that can keep the pintle from seating and make the injectors leak.
And the intake valves do develop a coating of carbon on their back sides.
But note that most gasolines contain compounds that aid in the same
function, the idea being to keep carburetor orifices and fuel injectors
deposit-free. So even without an explicit additive, you're still getting at
least some of this effect with every fill-up.
The best suggestion I can provide is: try it. Calculate your fuel mileage
before using it, dump a can of Lucas or some other candidate into your tank
at fill-up, and then see if you notice a difference in fuel mileage and
engine smoothness. Maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised. And let the rest
of us know what you find.
