Jason,
the only difference in your description between the engine almost stalling and
not when coming to a stop is the use of brakes. I would therefore seek the
reason for the behavior in the vacuum system. Brake booster, vacuum line,
valves and such. You may not notice any vacuum problems when driving, but at
idle the engine make far less vacuum and any leak would make more of an
impact.
