Does anything else die, or is it just those two things?

I would start by checking the voltage and connections at the battery, just to
be safe.  Then I'd start checking the grounds for both circuits.  Even if the
grounds look good, try unscrewing things and cleaning them up with a wire
brush.

Sounds to me like a bad ground somewhere.
