...but in actuality, would a reader with experience mind telling me
the down-side of the
original design?
Bob Little
67 Duetto with Hurlock-brand spin-on assembly that actually works
perfectly
Bob,
My experience only goes back to 1970. The original canisters
(750/101/105) in my opinion, are a good design still used on many
cars, however, the problem was/is the difficulty in getting the
correct gasket and getting that gasket to seat properly and stay in
place. While under the car, pushing up on the canister to start the
bolt, the gasket would slip a bit and get pinched causing your (my?)
Castrol "R" to leak on your future father-in-law's garage floor. . .
ahem. Ever try to clean up that Castor oil? Anyway. . .
Setting the gasket with some grease to hold it in place was the trick
for me. The correct sized gaskets (actually square cross section o-
ring) seemed to disappear sometime in the '70's so using the same one
over and over worked for a while. There are at least three different
canister sizes, so the filters, which fit them all, would come with
one, two or three gaskets, sometimes none being correct. Les Hurlock
began making his spin-on adapters which were/are a good solution.
There are many spin-on filter options and there is scientific data
available on the quality of the filtration of many of those filters,
haven't seen any data on the canister filter inserts to compare those
data to.
By coincidence, yesterday, on our South Shore (Boston) Beach and
Waterfront tour, (Alfa Owners of New England) we were joined by a
member in a Lancia Flaminia. The first stop on the tour, the Lancia
was out of commission due to. . . a leaking oil filter canister
gasket! Trying to "mark it's spot" in Alfa territory I guess ;)
Baldwin makes a long, spin-on filter (B295) about the same size as
the original canister, that can be painted to match the original
canister color if one is so anal (I certainly am not) I like the red
color. Baldwin also makes the drop-in original canister filters, FYI.
Hope that was not too much information!
Ciao a tutti,
