For smaller repairs I simply scavenge metal from an old panel. It's already painted, and depending on the donor often treated for corrosion, so it won't rust away sitting on your shelf.
Old panels also provide steel in preformed shapes which if carefully selected, may reduce the amount of re-shaping you need to do.
