For smaller repairs I simply scavenge metal from an old panel. It's already
painted, and depending on the donor often treated for corrosion, so it won't
rust away sitting on your shelf.

Old panels also provide steel in preformed shapes which if carefully
selected, may reduce the amount of re-shaping you need to do.

i would think a visit to a local autobody shop or supply house would do 
the trick.  they must have some stock on hand that they would be willing 
to sell you.  might even pick up some pointers.
