Having done many of these, Beatle, 'tis the normal way. Lift the rear high
and pull the motor from the front, top. Reverse the procedure to install the
engine. It is amazingly easy. I do, however, disconnect the driveshaft from
the trans. Now, if I could only find an easy way to pull GTV6 motors.

Skip, just to be clear, I assume they pulled the engine/tranny combo out
rearwards, parallel to the ground? i.e. from underneath the car.

Bruce and all,
A trick I never thought of until a friend mentioned it to me a year or
so
ago: He said that at the dealership where he was, besides the normal
unhooking of everything, they would jack the rear of the car into the air so
they could pull the engine straight out rather than up and over the radiator
support. In fact, he said they just put the rear of the car on a lift,
picked it up, pulled the engine and then let it back down.
If you pull engine, transmission and the front half of the drive shaft
as a unit it makes it a lot easier than disassembling everything in the car.
