As I remember, the ring doesn't come loose just by turning it. First you turn it, then you can gently force it 12 mm or so toward the back of the car. The groove (thread) has an almost 90-degree angle. And then you can jiggle the bulb loose from the reflector. That's how I remember it. As you mentioned yourself, you must be very careful because the plastic is brittle.
