HAH!--What I last posted suddenly wiped the fog off my eyes. If my lights dim
a little when I turn the key, it means enough juice is flowing to move the
solenoid shaft if free--So it must be the solenoid shaft that need freeing up.
That fits with the fact that banging on it oftens gets things going.
Cordially,
Alan Lambert

Alan,

starter drive (bendix)
doesn't slide easily down the shaft then the solenoid
might not be able to
move it. But what I am seeing is no movement at
all. Not even a wiggle.

all,

Duetto. I added a relay near the starter and that helped for a while
then the problem started again. I replaced the solenoid and again that
helped only for a while. I recently replaced the starter with a used
one
I had on the shelf and installed what I considered to be the best
working
solenoid and so far, so good!!

that since that solenoid gets it's ground thru the starter
motor,
something in the motor is developing higher resistance when it gets
hot
causing the solenoid to not get the current flow it needs to
energize.
That's just my theory but since they seem to work well cold
and changing
the motor seems to have cured my problem - - - - Skip

[alfa] Re: Starter solenoid The solenoid on my 1974 Spider starter
sticks
and abandons me when hot---(very frustrating to sit in a parking lot
waiting and hoping that sooner or later I can get out of there)--- Banging
on it with a metal rod often loosens it up.
