Dan, Did you consider the front wheel bearing as the source? Such things happen, and it would appear to be consistent with the loaded vs. unloaded condition. While applying thrust, the load is greater on the bearing, and that is the symptom you quote. You may be able to feel the wheel bearing roughness if it is the culprit by turning the spindle manually with the tire off, perhaps even with it on although the flywheel effect may mask the roughness.

It only happens when accelerating, not while coasting. It only happens when going forward. As I understand, this could be one of three conditions: Constant velocity joint - this is unlikely. I would expect a ticking noise where this is a growling or grinding noise. Also a CV joint would continue to make noise during coasting through a corner. Steering rack - I have never experienced this, so I do not know what it should sound like. Motor mounts - I had motor mounts replaced on an earlier 164 I owned, but I do not recall any steering noise. However, the Alfa Digest notes says that some steering noises have been associated with motor mounts. I think the noise comes from the movement of the engine resulting in a wheel contacting the inner fender. So the steering rack is the most likely, do you agree? Is there any way to test this hypothesis without pulling the rack? Any advice will be appreciated. Dan Nicholes Sent from my iPad
