Strange. I started up the car I mentioned recently as having problems (a 1978 Spider) and the fuel pump sounds normal now. It started on the first try and it idles and runs entirely normally. Maybe there was something temporarily blocking a fuel line or something? I have no idea, but I've decided to simply change the fuel filters and hope for the best.
