I've used this fiber/foil stuff.
http://www.lesliewong.us/2007/08/25/hood-insulation/ It's very effective,
but may not meet your aesthetic requirements. I've seen a Dynamat hood
liner product also though I never tried it. The original foam, or something
that looks like it, is probably still available, because the oem stuff is
still available for the '72 BMW.

I think it's not only for sound deadening but for heat insulation. Before I
installed it on the BMW, the hood got very, very hot from the engine heat.
