it's cool to keep her original but why not put that distributor in a drawer and put in a replacement with the condensor and points in a more asseccable position,or better yet an electric no point system so every 10 thou or so you have to fiddle with it again.

Remove the single 10 mm bolt staring up at you from the mounting boss. Special wrenches are made for this, but you can do it with any smallish open-end or box wrench. Don't bother the bolt clamping the collar to the distributor shaft, just the one securing the plate to the boss. That way the timing won't be disturbed too much, making it easier to bring things into tune when you refit the distributor. Note the direction the rotor is pointing before you take the distributor out. The drive coupling is offset and there are two ways to replace the distributor - the right way and the wrong way - and it will go in the wrong way of you force it, but the motor won't start. Once the distributor is out of the car, the points and condenser can be attacked with much less drama than if trying to do it with the dist. in situ.
