Very strange. This morning I tried to start it again--to look at the dash
lights. Two red lights above come on with the key in. When I turned the
key--it started. Oddly, though, the upper left red light stays on--which it
never does normally. So, if the car starts (at least intermittently) and that
light is on, what is that telling me?
Thanks
Colin

Subject: Re: [alfa] 1978 Spider fuel pump

bBefore assuming that the fuel pump is a gonner, make sure that you are
getting 12vdc (or more but not less) at the pump.B I'm not sure about your
'78 wiring, but my '73 GTV has a dedicated fuel pump fuse located in its own
housing by the fuse box. b Check the voltage and the fuse.
Fuel pump selection is determined if you have the original SPICA FI or if the
SPICA has been replaced with carbs.B SPICA FI requires the high pressure/high
volume pump (http://goo.gl/LYCgIF) whereas carbs require the other
(http://goo.gl/8j6TyN).
Changing out the fuel pump isn't hard but can be messy due to the fuel line
from the gas tank.B If you can't drain the tank, then purchase some fuel line
pliers (http://goo.gl/VG193H) to clamp on the fuel line from the tank to the
pump.B If you have the original fuel pump, the OD is different than the newer
models so you might have to fiddle with the clamp holding the pump to the car.
B
While down there, you should replace all the flexible fuel lines with new
ones.B I can't remember the sizes needed.
When was the last time you replaced the tank fuel filter?B Good idea to
replace it while you are all covered with gasoline...B I like NAPA Gold fuel
filter 3299 (http://goo.gl/7YKdkl) which has .5" OD connectors which match up
with the 12 mm outlet from the tank.B Use .5" fuel line here.

Hi everyone,
I heard a funny sound when I started my car this morning, but eventually the
usual whine of the fuel pump. The car started and I drove it about 20 miles,
parked for about an hour and a half, and then drove it home, the same
distance. Noticed nothing unusual when I started it to make the return
journey--even forgot momentarily that there had been something strange
earlier. Later in the day, when I went to start it again, there was NO sound
at all when I turned the key. The sound of the fuel pump is always obvious
before starting the car, but this time nothing. And the car won't start. I
assume the fuel pump has died.B
Questions.
1. Is replacing the fuel pump a DIY sort of job, or best left to braver
souls?
I can do basic stuff--like change the oil, change the spark plugs, etc., but
don't have a ton of tools. Would like to save money if I can.
2. Any particular pump to recommend? I see that International Auto Parts
offers two choices, one quite a lot more than the other. Worth going for the
better one?
3. Any other things that should be routinely done at the same time?
Thanks!
