About every other time I start it up in the morning a short whistle appears to come from the
front, possibly engine compartment. It lasts for about 1 second, so I have not been able to
diagnose it.
Water pump and alternator are both good candidates. If your water pump isn't leaking, my vote leans
toward the alternator. Sounds like it's time to recruit a friend, neighbor or significant other to
start the car while you listen with your head down in the engine compartment. From your
description, it seems the offender should be easy to identify.
