Alfisti,
Another one for ya:
I just replaced the Normale 1600 engine that has been in my Duetto since I
bought it 170,000 miles ago.
It started losing a little water about 5 or 6 years ago with no indication of
where it was going and the classic indication of low water with the heater not
putting out at idle. Then it overheated on the way back to Virginia from the
Toronto Convention. I was able to add water, nurse it on home and change the
head gasket. I noticed signs of compression leakage into the water jacket
between #1 and #2 cylinders. Thinking it was a defective head gasket, I
replaced it and went on.
Then on the way to the Convention in Rhode Island this year it really let
loose!! Blew all the water out of the cooling system and left me stranded in
Binghamton, NY.
I had it transported home, machined the head and replaced the head gasket
again. Still, the engine didn't run right. Started on two or three cylinders
but finally smoothed out after a minute or so. On a whim I attached a hose to
the radiator overflow nipple and stuck it in a glass of water. With the
engine running I had a steady stream of bubbles. Revved the engine and
emptied the glass! Replaced the engine!!
Took the Normale engine apart and found nothing wrong with the sleeves and
could see nothing wrong with the block. The head gasket looked good on the
head side but showed severe leakage on the liner side, not only between 1 & 2
but between 3 & 4 as well.
Looks like a have a block that is probably only suited to be a boat anchor ;-)
Any ideas?
Thanks,
