With the patches that Greg mentioned I was able to build Robert's
latest HLFS book. I will do the final hlfs script clean up when I return
mid-week.

I made the simple patch for DIY but never uploaded it because I have
decided not to support the combo of glibc-2.3.6 and binutils-2.17
