Alice ML is an extension of Standard ML. I suppose that for a school project, you won't need much of the Alice extensions, so available literature on SML will do. The Alice tour contains a few links to respective material: http://www.ps.uni-sb.de/alice/manual/tour.html#sml More comprehensive lists can be found here: http://mlton.org/StandardMLTutorials http://mlton.org/StandardMLBooks http://www.smlnj.org/doc/literature.html#tutorials You might want to start with the Gentle Introduction linked from the MLton tutorial page.
