Let’s get this straightened out. Turntables with USB ports just aren’t what they’re cracked up to be as a rule. `Its best to stay away from those turntables with a dreaded USB port. Obviously you’ve made your choice and are happy with it however USB ports on turntables are pretty much the same as putting USB ports on cassette decks, its done purely for convenience and not with quality in mind. So the next thing, you get your turntable and hook it up to the your computer through the turntables USB port, how do you know what sort of quality you’re going to get out of the turntable? Fact is you don’t. I remember looking at some Rega turntables a little while ago and was impressed by what I found though I was warned - If I bought one - to take the model with the standard input to a Fono amp, as I remember that model also had a Fono Amp which was switchable. I spent - according to Google’s currency converter - 2400 Krona on a turntable - that’s $400 - and the unit I bought was at the cheaper end of the line, not the cheapest but not the most expensive, I bought a Pro-ject. So that out of the way the next thing to consider is how you’re going to record your turntable and here I recommend a recorder that can handle 96K at 24 bit or even higher if you can manage it. There are several recorders you can use and the most obvious is the Olympus LS-100 or if you can’t get your hands on one of those then the Zoom H1 will do a good job. You can record with your computer of course but again we come back to quality and convenience, whilst the computer is a convenient way to do things a lot of Sound Cards aren’t of the quality that justifies the sampling of good Vinyl. Before I got my Olympus LS-100 I used a Soundblaster HD audio USB device which had both Line and Fono inputs, not the absolute best Sound Device for a computer but certainly a cut above most others and brilliant value for money at $100 Australian.
