I thank Freeholder Carol Y. Clark for her opposition to lethal wildlife strategies and urge other officials to follow suit. Exterminating 150 deer wont fix the long-term problem of urban encroachment on wildlife habitat. Deer hunting has shown to boost reproduction rates in deer populations. In a study to document the effects of "Community Based Deer Management" at the Watchung Reservation in Union County, NJ, researchers found 57% of killed pregnant deer had twins in their wombs after two years of hunting. After a third year of hunting, 60% of killed deer had twins and 8% had triplets. Similar studies demonstrate that deer who live under non-hunting conditions typically bear one child. When hunted, the birth rate doubles or triples. Hunting eliminates part of a population, so survivors rebound due to an abundance of food and space. With fewer males vying for territory, mating becomes the herd's primary focus. Ultimately, "managed" sport hunting can exacerbate human-deer conflicts by producing larger herds. A more permanent solution requires community planning with deer in mind. The blending of nonviolent techniques, on a site-specific basis, can effectively manage deer. Fencing systems and landscapes modified with native repellent plants can diminish landing spots for deer and subdue browsing on residential or commercial grounds. Low-cost audio/visual scare devices, used with repellents and fencing, can also dissuade deer. Some communities have successfully implemented translocation and immunocontraception programs to reduce birth rates in deer. I encourage Essex County to replace sharpshooters with responsible and ethical management methods. Please allocate funding to non-lethal deer control research/implementation. There are always alternatives to killing.
