Let's define a maximum number which is not configurable. If KDE is more recent than this maximum version, tell the user that we cannot guarantee that it will work, and offer her/him the choice to either quit, or continue at her/his own risks. VMWare does it exactly this way when it faces a "too recent" linux kernel.
